Karaton was built in cooperation with Ghent University and KU Leuven.
Currently, there are 4 learning techniques present in Karaton. These techniques are scientifically based and were therefore selected to integrate into Karaton.
These techniques are:
Flash reading
In this reading technique, a word is flashed for a certain number of seconds. After this, the child is shown 1 correct and 3 incorrect words to choose from as answers.
Recognised reading
Recognised reading is a reading technique in which a word is read aloud by a voice. After this, the child has to read 4 words and decide which word was read first.
Split
In this reading technique, a word is presented and the child has to correctly split it into syllables.
Spelling
In spelling, there are 3 different modes: Overtyping, flashing and aural. Overtyping is the easiest form in which the child has to type a word that is shown using the correct letters.
With flashing, a word is flashed for x-number of seconds after which it has to be typed.
Auditory is the last form. Here, an audio clip is played and the child has to type the word without 'visual reference'.
Each of these techniques can be set individually by the professional to create an ideal trajectory for the child.
These reading techniques are presented in the game as different mini-games, which the children have to solve correctly to collect materials. For each correct answer, the children earn a piece of material to build and expand their camp.
For more info on these mini-games, you can download the Karaton game manual. It is available at documents, left in the navigation on the main menu.
